Discussion: ABC Player for LotRO

I have a thought on perhaps a feature improvement.

Some times I may put several versions of a song into a single file for easy access.

but if I try and use the player to play a song here it auto launches ( or attempts to auto launch ) the song, which errors out because the files selected ( which are by default all of them ) may have different tempos.

So if a future build didn't auto launch these files, then perhaps we could manually select the files we want before it tries to play.

Another advantage would be if the song errors out, you could select or deselect parts to test the ones that work before going in to operate on the one that was broken

Ya, I should have re-phrased my post. I know u used actual midi samples from game, but also knew about how u interpolate - ed them. I was being a bit lazy, and just typed what I did to save time, my apologies..... The point to my post was that your program as it is now, is not exactly the same as if a file is played in game. But as I said in my post, it is unbelievably (freaking!) close to in game sound.
And I thank you once again for all your time spent on this and your other program!!!!

Thanks, I found the bug. It didn't handle chords inside tuplets properly. I'll fix it for the next version (coming real soon now™).

Version 1.1.0 is here! It has some new features and a bunch of bug fixes.

• Now in Stereo! In songs with multiple parts, the second and subsequent parts are panned slightly to the right or left to emulate how it would sound playing with other people in the game. (The stereo effect in ABC Player is slightly less than in the game).
• You can now paste songs from the clipboard to open them. Use Ctrl+V to create a new song using the text from the clipboard. Use Ctrl+Shift+V to add the text from the clipboard to the current song (useful if pasting a multi-part song from thefatlute.com, for example).
  You can also use Ctrl+V and Ctrl+Shift+V with actual .abc files, as an alternative to dragging and dropping the files.
• You can now append additional parts to a song once it's already open, including the same song multiple times. You can accomplish this in a variety of ways:
  • Choose "Append ABC file(s)..." from the File menu (Ctrl+Shift+O).
  • Choose "Append from clipboard" from the File menu (Ctrl+Shift+V) if the file is on the clipboard.
  • Hold down Ctrl and drag/drop the file onto ABC Player.
• Added a tempo slider to adjust the tempo of playback. Right-click on the slider to quickly toggle between 0% and 100%. Also removed the volume slider, as it didn't seem very useful.

One of the cool new features is the ability to paste the text of an ABC file without having to have the file saved on your computer. This is great for quickly previewing a song from places like these forums, thefatlute, etc. Once you've installed version 1.1.0, try out the paste feature with this song. Also listen for the stereo panning of the parts of the song (try toggling it off/on from the tools menu to hear the difference). If you like it, you can save it from ABC Player (Ctrl+Shift+S).

ETA: ARGGGHHH! I'm still having problems with the parenthesis! It's nice that the program doesn't give an error anymore but it still doesn't see them as ties which means that I have to go back into the file and correct them still. Can you fix this in the next update?

Very excited about this new release. You even accomplished the "hold that note" feature by allowing us to change the tempo to 0 at a certain spot.

The player shortens some of the durations in the clarinet, horn, and bagpipe parts when they have long held notes over busy, short notes in other parts at the end of this piece (among other places). Do I just have a freaky arrangement? Is there a cap on note durations? I take pains to avoid fractions in my durations, so my shortest notes sometimes have a duration of 2 or 3. That means some of the longest ones are (in some songs) as high as 128.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're talking about, but here are a few things about long notes. They are all the same as in LotRO from what I can tell:

• The sound samples for the flute, clarinet, and horn are 6 seconds long. Notes will fade out after 6 seconds.
• The sound samples for the bagpipes are 8 seconds long, which is the max note length that LotRO allows without giving an error.
• If the instrument is holding a long C (for example), and then the same instrument plays a short C in the middle of it, the short note will overwrite the long one: the long one won't continue after the short one ends.

I've cut down on the file size so there are just eight seconds of (rather dissonant) chords. The only way I can get the bagpipe to sound as it's supposed to (and as it sounds in LOTRO--see the eight-second segment that starts at 3:23 on this Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGJEH44oiHs) in the ABC player is to disable the theorbo and two harp parts. Those string parts are doing a tremolo that seems to interfere with the duration of the bagpipe's chords in the ABC player. The bagpipes should sound nearly continuously for all eight seconds, apart from short attacks when they hit the ends of their chords of duration 32. The bagpipes are the last part in this multifile.

It appears that there's a bug in ABC Player that's causing this song to run up against the max polyphony limit in Java's synthesizer. In cases where a note is played repeatedly and quickly, ABC Player is just sending note ON events to Java's synthesizer, and no note OFF events. That causes Java to think there are far more notes turned on than there actually are, so it starts "cleaning up" and turning off notes starting with the earliest. In this case, it's the bagpipe notes.

I'll fix ABC Player to be kinder to Java's synthesizer and send all of the note OFF events for the next version.

Yes, you're right. I owe you a apology. For some strange reason I thought that the game player saw both as ties.

Speaking of ties...

It seems to be holding ties and triplets longer than the note's length should be. It often causes overlapping and simply layers the previous note on top of the following one causing the note to become louder. <edited out> If this happens repeatedly (such as a fast trill), the notes can be come exceedingly loud as the program layers the following ones on top of all the previous ones, not ending any of them until the final note ends.

PS. The previous issue I had for being unable to change instruments is that I had left out the X:1. LotRO doesn't need it for file that has only one piece, but the ABC player won't actually change instruments without it even though you can select other instruments in the drop-down.

EDIT: Whoops. See that there's a new version. Going to check it out now. My bad.
EDIT AGAIN: Seems the issue is present in 1.1.0.

PPS. It also seems to cut certain, non-tied, non-triplet notes too soon in multi-part pieces. Seems to be limited to notes with whole numbers after them. "g2"

EDIT: It seems that a rest after the end of a tie holds the preceding note throughout the rest.

EDIT: It's very easy to hear when you slow the tune down to 10%. It almost sounds like the short notes as well as the final note of the ties are holding out for almost 2 units of time.

ABC Player v1.1.0 works with either G' or g, so it's not a problem

oh you're a sweetie! I changed it anyway. I learn my ABC'in from lotro, and I'm not a musician in RL so my knowledge about this stuff is limited. I make do with what I can!

Have been testing out the ABC player, and I have to say it's absolutely effing fabulous!! This is exactly what I wanted and I thank you for being a mind reader.

Couple of tweaky things that would make it a little more user friendly, if you have time to put em in.

1. Alphabetize the instruments in the dropdown menu.
2. Have a way of showing the filenames as well as or instead of the T: line. I personally only go and sort those out when I'm done with the ABC files and they're ready to go, so they all look the same when I'm playing around with the ABC Player! It's gotten me confuzzled a couple of times already.
3. I don't know if you use Anvil Studio to edit your midi's, but their solo function is really handy when editing midis. Rather than click to untick all but the one I want, it'd be nice to have a solo toggle in there.

Found an odd thing. I used /playlist for the first time today and discovered in a file that I've yet to completely test in LotRO (main isn't a minstrel) had two X:4's in it. The ABC player never flagged it and played it without complaining, but LotRO had the second X:4 red-flagged as a duplicate index in /playlist.

I can see where LotRO would take issue with it being unable to determine which X:4 is the one that the user wants. It might be a good idea to include that with the LotRO error-detection in the player.

The problem is the two bar lines on line 16 (above the M: line). Delete or comment out that line and it'll work.

I have other abc's with those 2 lines that have no problem.

When ABC Player sees the bar lines, it assumes it's going to be seeing notes too, and sets defaults for things like the note length, meter, and key. If you later set the note length to something other than the default (1/8) later, it will complain. You need to put all of your header information before any music notation for it to work with ABC Player.

Ok. I understand. To tell you the truth, it's Melody assistant that puts those in there. I have no reason why. It does it for some and not for others so it's hard to figure out when it will and will it not. I did figure that it did have something to do with the 1/16 note length though as this is the first one that had that.

Discovered that LotRO doesn't like anything to interrupt a tuplet -- no dynamics... not even whitespace (but ties are allowed into, within and out of tuplets in both single notes and chords and mixed ties in chords, and rests are allowed). The player apparently accepts breaking a tuplet with dynamics or whitespace.

Absolutely stupendous. It's allowed me to work on multiparters in earnest, something I've been putting off because I hate to inconvenience other players.

I can't thank you enough for this, and I think I speak for many in this regard. Bravo! Bravissimo!

Regarding your Midi to ABC converter...do you have plans to add the ability to output multiple parts in one save? I often create 4-6 part pieces and have to cobble them together after saving each part separately. Assigning tracks to various parts would be most helpful! Other than this, I love your software...keep up the good work!

Fantastic work, Digero. Now if I only had this back in January when I had to sift through 700 files to see which were good and bad. :P Would have been much easier to do out of the game instead of in, strangely enough.

They probably are jealous of other programs and don't want you to use anything other than their program, so it's inserting something that doesn't appear anywhere in any version of the ABC standard in hopes that any other program you use will break and force you back to Melody? I can't think of any other reason why it would insert those superfluous ||'s.

Also, good eye, Digero, by my count the ||'s were on line 15 and I was trying to figure out why it would complain about the K: D.

What URL did you download ABC Player from? I can only vouch for downloads from http://lotro.acasylum.com/abcplayer/. The files didn't have malware when I uploaded them to the server, and I just did a virus scan on the files on the server and it came up clean. Did your antivirus program say that any files included with ABC Player were infected?

Ok, I was an idiot. I was looking at some sheet music today and noticed that there was a double barline at the end of each song so || does appear in the standard (at least implicitly). According to Wikipedia, a || is also sometimes used to demarcate different sections of a single song. I still don't see why it would be put at the beginning of a file, though. If you're going for looks a %%score directive is more in keeping with the standard (what little we have, anyway) like:
%%score {(soprano alto) (tenor bass)} [piano1 piano2]
[V:soprano]...

The problem isn't so much that there is a double barline, but that there's more header information after the double barline. ABC Player requires that all of the header information come before any music notation.

Normally it is valid to change things like the tempo, time signature, key, etc. in the middle of the song. However, LOTRO doesn't support that, so ABC Player doesn't either.

Yeah, I used the URL from your original post. Nothing I ran after the infection pointed to the Player as a source of the malware. The only connexion to your Player was the timing of the DL and install. I just wanted to get the word out in case the Player or website was the source. Thanks for double-checking on your end.

Wait, what? It's ok to change the unit note length, right? I just finished making an ABC version of "For unto us a Child is born" from Handel's Messiah and one accompaniment voice sometimes has 16th notes moving around during the "Wonderful, Counselor" parts and sometimes quarter note chords and to avoid putting in lots of 2's, 4's, or //'s, I changed the L field 49 times over the course of the 6-part song. I'm not going to have to go back and redo half the bloody song, am I?

Honestly, LotRO can't handle tempo changes and key changes? Cheese.

Edit: can LotRO player handle volume changes in music? +ff+, etc., in the original ABC before it becomes a MIDI (the volume changes can be heard in the MIDI when it's played in Windows Media Player)?
