    Halberds

    How good are halberds, are they better than a 2h sword for a captain?

    Re: Halberds

    They are pretty comparable. The sword hits a little more often, the Halberd does more damage unless you slot the man trait, and it generates more aggro. If it is a LI, the legacies matter more than anything else...

    Re: Halberds

    Assuming you slot the Racial trait there is virtually no difference, a sword has a slightly reduced miss chance (good for PvP or corruption removals) whereas the halberd has a higher threat generation (good for tanking, pulling aggro off minnies).

    So its really a matter of personal preference, the difference is really negligable between those two.

    Depend what you want to do.

    In my opinion it goes like this :

    greatsword = DPS
    Halberd = Tank
    GreatAxe = Something in-between by lowering your target armor. (i still wonder why i use one... oh yeah! chop chop).
    If it isn't about FlameThrower, Grenade and Rocket Launcher, you're playing the wrong classes, race and game..

    The sword -hit chance is somewhere around 1-2%. Nothing special. Just go for whatever gets the best legacies.

    Great Swords are for heros that like to look cool. Halberds are for other heros that like what a good blade can do, but also like to poke things with a stick.

    If your captain is only level 29...just go with whatever you like best, but a 2-hander of some sort is going to make more efficient use of the skills you have at that level.

    Unless things change dramatically, Seyahat's advice is pretty solid for level-capped captains. Unfortunately for me, the best legacies seem to being ending up on ugly hammers.

    Yup lol For me it's clubs... CLUBS... they land the most awesome ID's but swords and halberds, usually junk. Just chance, I know, but it feels off. But the kickin club does look very much like a big metal baseball bat, and beating down an orc with a giant metal baseball bat has more appeal than I thought it would.

    If I had known I would have named my captain, Casey Jones

    Actually like the hammers, just wish I could get rid of the one that looks like it has a giant cement block at the end. Was riding around in the moors the other day and had someone ask me why I had dice over my head...

    I respect Captains that use clubs. Yes - generally it comes down to so what do you have that got the best legacies? But if one has a choice there is something to be said for the different characteristics.

    1H/2H Hammer - occasionally reduce target's evade*
    1H/2H Sword - better hit chance
    Halberd - threat and a little extra damage
    1H/2H Club - occasionally reduce target's melee speed*
    1H/2H Axe - occasionally reduce target's armor*
    Spear - occasional bleed
    Mace - occasionally reduce target's movement speed*
    Dagger - slightly higher critical chance

    I like weapons that benefit the whole group when the effect kicks in - marked *. Problem is I am not sure these effects work on some mobs especially bosses. Can one really reduce the Lieutenant's (blank)? The reasons I use a 2H Sword are:
    • better hit chance (because on raids I trait for Will/Fate and my Agility is the pits)
    • shucks it just looks cool okay? like a lightsaber
    My Guardian has a great 1H Club for tanking - and on most mobs occasionally slows them down which benefits the whole group.

    One of the best moves Turbine made - and we need to give the devs credit sometimes - was when they made weapon speed and damage consistent. So that no longer do we choose weapons based on how hard they hit - but on what effect we most want. Among other things it made Daggers an attractive choice for Burglars.

    it was actually the damage formula not the weapons themselves, which is why I didn't like it... I still wish they made 2h a little slower. the effects are too minimal. I'd say the armor rend and attack speed slow are probably the best for grouping. the rest have an even smaller effect (threat from halberd, 2% or less hit chance addition, and the rest).

    I tend to agree with the idea of using a weapon that buffs a group, like you said, although it comes down to your role in a group (raid) as well. Personally, we use captain's to manage corruptions on the LT so I've tended to use a greatsword for the miss chance (combined with the extra damage) rather than say the hammer for evade. In addition the extra accuracy and damage is quite useful when soloing in the moors.

    At the end of the day a 2% damage bonus is really negligable and you can go with whichever weapon you feel fits you character, even cosmetically. No group is going to judge you for using a different weapon either way (having said that I will judge captains if they spend their LI points in a silly way lol).
