Before I go to bed, I wanted to take a little more than my fair share of post time. This is my perspective as a casual player.
I love this game.
The game model is not going to change that. The game is still as beautiful to me today as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow.
No amount of player jackassery will keep me from thinking this game is beautiful and enjoyable. The world is so huge that it will be easy for me to avoid what goobers /ignore doesn't work on. There will still be areas where you can wander for hours and never see a single other player, and this with my being on Landroval.
No amount of torch-and-pitchforking will make me think the new model is anything but A Good Thing or make me want to cancel my lifetime subscription.
This game has captured my imagination and interest more than any other game out there, and I expect that to remain so for several years.
This is Middle-Earth. That's all I need.

Agree totally. This is a great game and I am also here for the long run. From the announcements so far this seems like a good move for the game and Turbine seem to be looking after thier current player base well.
I look forward to seeing how this is all implemented and from comments by the devs so far not much is going to change for me in Middle Earth!
Bumping this thread because more of this is needed
If Middle Earth doesn't take a moment to understand why Sauron was able to draw tens of thousands of disenfranchised individuals to his cause, then they're destined to fight the same war all over again...as soon as the next Sauron shows up.
I agree 100%. I'm in this game until the ring is destroyed and beyond. I love this game, my characters and (most) of the community. I only regret that I never did buy the lifetime subscription. Ah well, it's still cheaper than going to the bar, and a lot more fun.
Shorfast: Hobbit warden - He is a small fellowship.
<--- Lifer, and I too love this game and it's community. I am still concerned for that community when this change comes, but will make the best of it, regardless of what ill winds may blow.
LOTRO now, LOTRO tomorrow, LOTRO until they shut down the servers for the last time.
Lifetime account here and I have to agree with the OP. What has made this game more enjoyable than the rest (and I have many years vested in MMOs) is the great world of Middle Earth that J.R.R. Tolkien has given us and Turbine has hence crafted in dimension beyond the written page. Nothing can change that.
I'm pretty confident in saying that I believe the Devs have not changed their love of Tolkien lore just because the game is moving to a F2P model. I think they will always give us their best effort in keeping with that lore.
As for WB's recent purchase, I doubt they want LotRO to fall on it's face. To keep LotRO being the successful franchise it has been thus far, they will have to keep the game interesting and moving in a forward direction. Anything less and WB will have thrown away the cost of purchasing Turbine. I also don't think they want to throw away the recognition potential of something as well known as The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, probably one of if not THE most recognizable fantasy franchises across media/books/gaming. This could potentially expose LOTRO to millions of Tolkien fans that might not otherwise know about it.

Whoopty do. You love the game.
The fact that Turbine said Free 2 Play wasn't being considered for LotRO or that Turbine sold lifetime accounts so close to their F2P announcement doesn't matter anymore.
No seriously lies and underhanded bussiness are all utterly neutralized by your love. Its like it never even happened.

This is the only thing that concerns me (lifer here).
DDO as a game is great fun....most of the community is putrid.
You are the new school, before that there was the old school.
I must be ancient, my ex-wife thinks I'm pre-school

So? My wife and I bought lifetime accounts just a few months ago, and we're glad we did. We still keep everything we had before, and we get $5 worth of points. We're coming out ahead.

There's a difference between lying and plans changing.
I will be with this game to the end, into the very fires of Mordor.
But seriously, I am very happy about all of this. I will be able to convince more people to join. I will be able to continue to have fun. And I will be getting free TP on top of it. What more can I say?
Hear hear! *raises mug* People are falling into hysteria over this. I love this game, and haven't even considered dropping it because of this. I might even use it and become a Premium member myself.

It should be noted that lifetime subs will increase in value once this model goes live as they will be getting a stipend of points in addition to unfettered access to all content. It should also be noted that even the most devoted F2P gamer that refuses to pay for anything will more than likely denied access to moria and beyond due to the relative infeasibility of farming up thousands of store points on top of outright grinding mobs from lvl 22ish to 50. I had to grind mobs in my late 30's on my first toon and even with enhanced XP, its a less than awesome process.
The fact that F2P wasn't being considered for LOTRO when DDO was re-released doesn't really concern me... I know that is largely semantics, but that is when Turbine stated that they weren't considering the pricing model for LOTRO. The relative success of the model and the unlikeliness of the LOTRO content schedule seems to have joined forces and changed some minds... and the fact that the only constant is change, well, it really comes as no surprise to me. Maybe its not ideal, but it is far from shady... and I happen to know a thing or two about shady business.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
Cheers for the lack of "It's the End of the World" fear and pandemonium that has been popping up on the boards today.
I have no idea how this MT, F2P will work out. I am worried the community might change a little, but I have no idea what will happen. It doesn't mean I want my money back on my lifetime sub, or that I'm calling it quits well before we have all the facts and get to see how it works out. The overreaction is in full overdrive so far.
So thanks to the OP for this thread, and to the ones who disagree I must quote someone from earlier here:

I'm looking forward to this. I hav friends that will join now, couldn't afford the monthly cost b4. This is a good way to expand the community. Yes, there will probably be soem bad ones, but thats what the ignore list is for. I am a member of the lotro community and i approve of this message.

True enough. I'm hopeful that my brother will give LOTRO a try now. He can only afford the subs his wife and he insist on keeping in WoW, but both were willing to try DDO on my suggestion when it went F2P. Perhaps this Autumn I'll be able to get at least my brother into LOTRO as a Free player.
What would be better still is if we could "gift" LOTRO Points to friends, allowing them to get some content (and thus go Premium), and play together in Eriador. That would go a long way towards helping us entice these friends and family members to go VIP.
Originally I wanted nothing to do with micro transactions but whether I like it or not its inevitable and seems the way of the future. The DDO/Lotro model seems tolerable, in fact is actually seems beneficial. As a lifer I get a pretty good deal out of it and looking at the DDO store there's a lot of stuff on there for a low amount of points. I've gotten really bored with Lotro since all there is for me to do these days is grind deeds and run skirmishes, hopefully all this means Lotro will be seeing more content.
Only one "doom" post in this thread? Really? come on community.. y'all let me down there.... (kidding kidding).
Change can be scary, and people are reacting to the upcoming change with kneejerk reactions; these reactions are getting in the way of many folks reading the details thoroughly and going off on rants.
I will not be going anywhere, Turbine knows what not to do with this; DDO has given them a solid base in the whole Hybrid F2P system, and they will apply those lessons here.
I will be watching what they do with the store warily, but overall I have faith that they will do what is right by the people who love this game.
I got so burned out on the negative posts since the announcement that I was expecting this one to be sarcasm, thank you to the OP and the majority of replies for brightening up the day with some positivity.

Back after a long hiatus
Founding Lifetime Member/LotRO Beta Tester - Still love the game
I also will be staying around. If there had been free play options earlier I would have started playing (and paying) the game a lot earlier than I did. Now my partner can play with me without us having to pay for two accounts - and since I have been searching for a job since December this was impossible before. I can also rest easy knowing that if our financial situation gets tighter I will still be able to play the game that I have grown to love.
Yes, there may be some rough bits when it goes live. I believe, however, that the incredible players and community here can overcome that. We were all new players at one time! ( and trolls make great orc bait!)
Been here since the original closed beta invites. I'm a founder and a life time subscription holder. I play this game with my wife and my friends. We're here to stay. We love this game and I have yet to have anything to complain about with any patch I see. Your mileage may vary, but I love what they've done and look forward to what they'll be doing.
It's not about being smart around here, it's about checking your sanity at the door and playing along with all the people, even the invisible ones.

Cheers and a hearty "Huzzah!" The sky isn't falling, doom isn't coming, and life in Middle Earth will continue on. Our circle of friends is going to grow (at least for those not trying to circle the wagons) and I'm growing more and more excited about the future now.
Hey, maybe now I can even get my wife to try the game, finally, since she won't have to pay for it!

Likewise, I have a bunch of friends and colleagues who have heard the news and want to give LoTRO a try. F2P just fits their playstyle and budget.

That's a great idea. It might get missed by Turbine in the torrent of posts this forum is getting, so I suggest sticking it in the Suggestions forum.

While you can't transfer your own points to anyone else, we should have point cards and codes available you'll be able to gift people.
Just wanted to say - I'm one of the ones who purchased a lifetime account in the most recent offering at (2 accounts actually). I don't regret the choice and would have made the same choiice again if I had to today.
I really love the game, love the community, and absolutely enjoy the fact that i get to spend time in Middle-Earth any time that I like.
