Just as the title says, when would you take Fire over Lightning traits. Just curious because I'm debating wether or not to decon my fire LIs... I may not, depending on future content updates..
EDIT: I'll add that I ran Fire primarily in MoM, and I quite possibly would be still if Chilling Rhetoric wasn't broken, combined with the DoT resets and increased fire mitigations on bosses/other mobs, and damage transfers, etc... With the changes to instances/the combat system, though I'm curious which of you still trait it, and where.

The only place I could justify traiting it is for the BG Twins, as their fire mits are not insane, but retraiting just for that boss isn't worth it imo. I've got a fire stone/satchel sitting there at max level, but i haven't put relics into them, and don't plan on it atm. If the next update doesn't give fire its punch back, they'll hit the decon pile and free up some serious space.

For me at least, fire beats lightning everywhere in DN except the trolls, and at the watcher as well. I'd also use it on the twins, and Durchest as well. Sure his fire mitigation is higher, but assuming you have tar, weapon of flame, and the raven debuff on him (you would probably have the raven for shadow mitigation anyway) I can't imagine the difference would be as great as is generally believed. His adds actually have fairly bad fire defense from what I understand. For the gauntlet, back when my kin was actually doing it we had most everyone else on the goblins and wargs except for a tank and me using fire on the uruks, so the issue with fire being bad on trash was avoided.
Fire uses more power per dmg done. (note im not talking dps here) tho it could be argued it uses more for the dps done. see fire lightning dps threads.
Inductions are slow and sometimes u need to be very mobile, which takes away from the dps done.
Bosses wipe dots more so in BG but it still suxs.
Watcher, alot of dps is wasted cus tents have low morale. DN trash is the same. Bosses, again need to be mobile, think trolls etc. BG trash same deal, knocked back alot makes it hard to get inductions off. Bosses need to be mobile.

But most importantly. You cant tank fire traited.
I love the fire line, most of MoM I traited fire. There is no reason to trait fire any more. Since SoM I've parsed and parsed and parsed (Turtle, Marauders, DN, DG, SH's Merroval of Morale...) And I haven't been able to justify using fire any more. The higher resistances, the tier down bugs, and the higher mits to fire have really hurt the fire line. According to ZC the fire line was supposed to be the long term sustainable high dps line. I feel like bugging it and posting my parses, but I'm sure that if they wanted to fix it, they'd just nerf lightning instead.
I still trait fire for Watcher, basically because I have less chance of drawing aggro and wiping the raid with fire dots than with lightening crits. Yes, the tank could probably get it back quickly, but steady fire dots and corruption removal work quite well and no need to increase his stress.
Lately I pretty much trait 5 lightening, 2 fire for everything else. Mobility is just too important in many of the instances and raids. Even in DN, on the worm boss or mistress, where you need to be switching targets or are getting punted periodically, I feel I don't you can get the full benefit of the fire line. With the various bugs, lightening offers better damage given the situations you're in.
I dunno, it seems the only reason to trait fire anymore is for the fun of it; lightning seems to be better in nearly every situation. Also you could still do good fire damage even while lightning traited, as there's not as much of a damage raise between using fire while fire traited or using it while lightning traited as one would be led to believe. Our fire trait line really ought to get some love; with either a revision, new skills, and/or both.
Ughh...another one of those mad, hungry hobbits with a sword...

Agreed. I don't trait fire anymore for this reason as well. I can always use it, but traiting just doesn't give a good enough boost.
Tikrocks 65 Rune-Keeper (Elendilmir)
Tikala 65 Warden / Galliano 59 LM / Tikbee 55 HNT / Tikapitan 50 Cappy / Aaranth 40 Champ / Daegarun 35 GRD / Elluria 28 MIN
Rune-Keepers go Zap! Zap! Kapow! (at least until the sound effects were changed.)
The only advantage to fire ATM is the additional range, which can help in one or two raid fights in very large rooms, or where being close can be bad --- for example, DN might be an ok place for fire.

I still still a big fan of fire even solo. Though when I am solo it tends to be hybrid between fire and lightening dps and I tend to be healing traited. I am that way because I been rather poor most of the time and I swear as soon as I retrait I get a can you heal x tell.
One place I really like it in SG is when you have a brute and something else to load up the something else while the brute has the shield up. Then when the brute's shield goes down the other guy is about half dead from the dots that were still on him at the time.
death from below I still love fire there also. .
I will admit alot of times having too many dots on a mob that is almost dead can be a waste but so can a 6k ec on a mob with 500 morale .
So yes, this is basically what I expected... Lightning > Fire in pretty much all situations now, but don't decon the stone until we see what comes with the next patch. Thanks, and I'm somewhat interested to hear more thoughts.
+Lightning crit mag
+Lightning damage
+Fire damage
+Frost debuff duration
-Battle power cost (to be replaced with either +Will or +Fate)
+Vitality
When I am doing SG I unslot my -Resist trait and put in Tale of Rage for the 2nd boss. When I am doing Turtle I slot all my fire traits and usually do around 100k+ damage total. The +Fire damage legacy is definitely a plus for versatility.
