I started putting this together to make sense of skirmishes and thought it might be useful for the community. Thanks csteelatgburg for moving this into the lorebook! Everyone please head over there to help update it.
The Ranks for all of the roles and skills progresses to 20. The level on each Rank is not a minimum required level, but rather the approximate level of the role or skill compared to your character. I moved the tutorial quest rewards to the top of the list, so that you could see what skills the instructions actually give you to get started with a given soldier role.

Thanks Isenwolf. I meant to type rank 1-20, since each one can go up to 20. During Beta I had more info for each level but things changed quite a bit, so I waited until release, and I will populate more information in it as I play through.
I'm still puzzling over what to focus on as a hunter. It would be nice if you could try them out at a high level (a one-time scroll maybe?) before spending all of the time building one up to see how it works at high ranks.

I have a minstrel myself, and was not able to try a hunter in beta, so I can't speak to what would be best, but I agree with you about trying out the various types.
I'm running a Warrior. I'd like to pitch in some rank stats once I'm back in-game.
That would be excellent! I ran that in beta, and it worked great with a minstrel. But all of the stats and levels were very fluid, so I had to wait until things were live to rework this list.
Might want to have a quick look at each since they indicate an 'area' which could be a bit misleading.
For example, they say 'Kingsfell' for North Downs, whereas it is just west of Esteldin.
Many of the skirmish camps seem to be just outside a gate, fairly near a door entrance, or part of an already existing camp network.
The unusual ones I saw are, for example, Rivendell (is anything 'normal' in Rivendell lol) where it is near the stable, Eregion where it is way up at Gwingris instead of at Echad Dunnen, and the Shire where it is way up at Brockenborings instead of in Michael Delving.
Just a grumble, as I'm sure there will be a link here once this information is available:
It would be nice if Turbine put information on the various things you can earn for marks up on the Lorebook. The information must exist in an internal specification document, so whenever that document is created or changed, a public version (the user manual, if you will) could be created/maintained as well. It would be so much more efficient than fansites poring through each screen and copying everything down. I know that, just like item stats on the Lorebook were finally automated, it may come in time, but the most important time to have it up is *right now* when the majority of the player base is trying to use it.

Thanks tordana08 and Hyetal for the updates. I added them to the list.
Also Hyetal, the skirmish mark cost for each rank changes as your toon levels up. For example, when get to level 65, it will cost you less to rank up your warrior than when you are level 61.
I was keeping track of those skirmish mark costs until jwbarry pointed that out to me in beta.
In fact, I am going to try and level to 65 as fast as I can so that I can then pay the least amount of skirmish marks to level up my soldiers and update this list. That's the plan for now anyway.
I'm also glad to see that someone else did the work of putting up the skirmish rewards (thanks jhan75 for the info). I could try to incorporate it into this, but at this time, I don't have immediate plans to do so. It would have been too much typing on my part, and that's where I understand your grumble NotYetMeasured. I have been looking at the lorebook from time to time to see what info is there so I can cross-link it, but I haven't seen much yet.
I might have missed which vendor I need to go to, but how do you change some of the other attributes? I'd like to change the race of my soldier, for instance. I found the cosmetic vendor where you can change hair color, etc., but not the race.
Also, can you name your soldier?
Thanks for the great compendium so far. It's a shame that there isn't any of this information in the LoreBook. I guess someone here could take the time and enter the information there as well, but it really seems like Turbine should preload it with info when new features come out.

Yeah, I started to wonder about that as I was going along... but I was at 60 the whole time so I didn't notice anything jump. But I wrote it down, so I included it. :P
This link is pretty awesome, and should probably be it's own sticky. (in addition to this one, which is also awesome, and thanks to the OP for managing it)

How much of a difference are we talking about here?
I was planning on leveling my soldier first, but now I might just get enough marks to buy what I need from the Curiosities vendor, then wait until when/if I am capped to do the soldier thing.

In the cosmetic vendor there is a drop down menu at the top, which is helpful for seeing the different categories, and you should be able to trade for a different race in there. I haven't checked it on live.
Also, if you right click on your soldier's picture icon, it will bring up the pet menu where you can rename him whatever you like.

The skirmish mark prices changed a bit from beta, but I did notice last night that when I was lvl61, the cost to rank my soldier from 3 to 4 was in the 130s, and at lvl62, it was 116. It also seems to be a percentage, so a rank 1 might only drop from 15 to 12, but a rank 10+ might be a difference of hundreds. At least that is the way it was in beta. I hope this helps.

This is the case with all the barterers. It's pretty nice. The categories on the cosmetics barterer include "Soldier race" and then a category for each race's attributes. Gender isn't separated, it's just "Man," "Woman," "Elf-lord," "Elf-maiden," "Hobbit-lad," "Hobbit-lass," and "Dwarf-kind." So it's a combined race/gender attribute.

This might've been a dream but I think the next rank available for my warrior, after I hit level 61 cost something like 600+ SM. But you say the cost drops as you grow in level? ...prolly a dream then. XD
One thing I've determined as a hunter with an Herbalist Soldier is if I've gotten massively whaled upon and my morale is low, I should ease up on the damage I do on the last couple in a wave, as my Herbalist provides no out-of-combat morale regen. Which is a pain when the next wave contains a Lieutenant, or worse, an Encounter
There may be a trait for out-of-combat morale regen, but if there is, I haven't seen it yet.
I'm interested in what affects final SM payouts. Soldier deaths is a tracked stat. Is there a penalty for them? (I sure hope not!)
Also, I wonder how the scaling works. If the payout is 118% does that mean at the end I will have 236 instead of 200, or is it applied to each award. So something that gives 4 Marks might not change if fractions are rounded down. If there are a lot of small-award events, this could add up to give an effective rate far below 118%.

There is no out-of-combat morale or power regen traits. I also notice that if I fear a creature, my herbalist stops healing me. I didn't use a herbalist at all in beta, so it is a new experience for me as well.

I haven't found one either - and I'm finding the same thing - If I'm low morale I slow down my DPS to keep combat mode going longer so my herbalist will heal me. Herbalist does definitely seem to be the way to go with Hunter, though, as that's the problem I ran into most before I specialized my soldier, running out of morale. Of course, now I run into the power problem, but I can regen power, I can't regen dead.
Thanks for this awesome guide. It is very helpful.
A suggestion: It would be useful to know at what level each skirmish is unlocked, and sort them in that order.
Thanks travgar, great suggestion. I added the skirmishes with what level they are and the type. I forgot to write down which book 9 chapter unlocks the last 3 and which order they are in, so I will update that when I get the info.

As far as I know, the only penalty on skirmish marks is if your main toon dies in the instance, and that is clearly shown by the debuff on your toon, which also stacks. It can be removed by waiting the appropriate amount of time, or successfully completing a skirmish. I think the soldier death stat is just another statistic in that window.

As for this, I'm not sure how it works. I would suspect that it gives the percentage at each award point though. I ran a 3-man last night with kinmates and I received one less skirmish mark than they did because I was level 61 and they were both 62, and that was at each successful wave of the Ford of Bruinen, so overall, I received something like 5 or 6 less skirmish marks.
Does anyone know what the buffs are from the Ultimate Banner of Precision and Ultimate Banner of Protection? I'd like to know what they do before I spend hundreds of marks to buy them. The +X Banner doesn't mean a whole lot to me.

I don't know what they mean. In beta they were even more ambiguous and mysterious. I assume it might be similar to the crit buff for captains (perhaps the precision), but no clue on the protection buff (I'm sure its not ICPR buff)
Does anyone know how to pick up "Inspiring Shout". I cant seem to find the skill on my rank 8 bannerguard. Is it one I have to trade for?
Inspiring Shout (Healing: Low over Time, Ally)
Rank 1: +37.5 Healing, lvl29
It is not one that you barter for. I was able to see it at the skirmish trainer. The only thing I can think is that you have the box checked at the top to only show trained skills, and it needs to be unchecked to show all of the possible skills that you haven't trained yet.
