Error 40000
Can't connect since patch. Getting this:
An error occurred while updating the game.
For more details, click "Details" (see below). For support online, click "Help". [Error=40000]
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Was working fine before. Client seems to stall when first launched. A flashing screen with white bars appears and then resolves to the above screen. Restarting computer achieves nothing. Restarting client either has it crash itself or it has be closed via windows task manager.
All other games are working fine (WoW, AoC, Whammer, EVE, GW)
Just bought a budget copy of DDO and it also seems to stall at the login screen - but there's no error. It just freezes there, doing nothing.

Apparently this is a very common issue and not particularly old; I've just not come across it before (and the fix is not apparent as what fixes it for some, others claim to have no effect). Nor does their seem to have ever been a formal response that I can detect from Googling

Re: Error 40000
The 40000 error can be a tough one to pin down, it has several causes. Typically its permissions/access related.
To start I'd definitely manually update your firewall by taking the game files: "lotroclient.exe", "turbinelauncher.exe", (and turbineinvoker.exe on Vista) out of its list of exceptions or allowed programs and re-adding them. (Firewall KB)
Also try going into C:\Program Files\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online and look for the file "TurbineRegisterGDF.exe" and on XP double click it, on Vista right-click and choose "Run as Administrator". It should pop up a few "Success" messages to click Ok on. If it pops errors though they're most likely .Net related usually. If that's the case uninstall and reinstall .Net 1.1
Open the "Add or Remove Progams" (XP) or "Uninstall a Program" (Vista) option in the Control Panel and look for "Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1" and "Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 (Hotfix)” and uninstall both of those starting with "Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1" and then the Hotfix (Which will give an error but it will take itself from the list) and download and reinstall them from the links below:
Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1

Re: Error 40000
The compatibility error may be .Net 1.1 interacting with 3.0/3.5 you may need to uninstall that before reinstalling the 1.1/1.1 hotfix

Re: Error 40000
Installation or automatic updating of 3.0 or 3.5 sometimes messes up 1.1. Just re-install 1.1 and it's service pack.
ps. I usually did not have to uninstall 1.1 beforehand.

Re: Error 40000
try disabling Windows Firewall, that worked for me.
Not sure why the firewall was the problem on Examine data though, seems odd
