I'm leveling a group of characters at once in order to make myself as independant as I possibly could. Obviously providing my own consumables had to be on the list and thanks to your guide I am happily farming away on my farming alt so I can supply my cooking alt who is feeding my main as he adventures along!

Good idea. But you need to get your cook and other crafters to level 20 so they can be taken into areas where they can pick up the items need to advance to Master level. Your farmer could be level 1 and a Supreme Master Farmer. )

This is great! Farming is slow but well worth it. I am also trying to be as self-sufficient as possible with my alts. This was the missing piece. Now, I'm practically my own guild!
How do I recommend something for a sticky and have you also tried posting this in the Lore Guide?
yeah i did and i failed i think not sure. i tried to put in lore book but i don't understand these things. darn computers they're sooo naughty.
I put it in the lorebook for you so we wouldn't lose a valuable resource.
I tried to keep it pretty much as you had written it but added in some things that others had mentioned in the thread.
If you want to make changes, just click the edit tag and if you use the rich editor you should pick it up pretty quick but if you need help, just pm me and I will get back to you.
Is it possible to plant a field using a keyboard command? All other processes of farming can be done from the keyboard, but it appears I have to mouse click on the "make" box in the crafting window to initiate the process.
Just wondering... I hit Supreme Master Farmer last night, and after farming close to 3000 fields, I only make back 50% - 60% of my seeds from planting (not using crit soil, and planting in regular fields). Have any of you made back more seeds than you plant? Just wondering. I want to build a seed reserve of rare pipeweed seeds...

The rare pipe weed seeds (those not for sale at vendor) should be pretty easy to amass once you begin farming that type of weed. Each poor plant returns 3 seeds instead of 1. So as long as you get at least 2 poor plants per field you are gaining. When trying to get seeds do not use crit soil though. The scary time is if you only have 5 seeds to begin with, if you don't pull the required 2 poor plants you don't have enough to even plant a second field. In fact untill you have a good supply in the bank farming these things can be nerve wracking.

well this guide is going to be obsolete with the new farming changes. what a shame. i don't even know if i am going to re edit this to reflect the changes or not. and the same for the guide to pipeweed.
If you do decide to edit it for the new changes, I am happy to provide whatever information and insight that I can. This has been a wonderful resource and such things should be preserved, even in the face of adversity.
Also note with crop rotation like this, you can click multiple fields at once and they will queue up to be harvested in the order that you clicked them. To prevent field decay, click on your first crop planted, then the last , the click the outter corners of the rest as you harvest your 1st crop. This works with ANY harvesting tool, as you do not have to pause between crops to wait for one to disappear.

I plant 5 to 6 at time and rotate a few degrees so they are not stacked completely on each other. It makes it easier to harvest and quicker too as you don't have to hunt around as much to find an active crop. The timing is about right for superior steel farming tools but it is better with the higher level farming tools.
Heyyy folks well I just revised Neel's guide to reflect the May 2011 changes and added a few things to it like a leveling guide and a guide for the new pipe-weed. I've added a list of farming crit drops and what they're for as well. I notice that it's not easy to find Neel Sweetleaf's Guide though; I pretty much have to come to this thread and follow the link here. Is there any good way to make it so that the sort of new-to-crafting players who can actually use such a thing can find it?

Thanks, Lith, for revising the guide! I came here to find a list of all the crit items that farming produces and what they are used for. The information is somewhat scattered (had to find the cook's items in the Cook forum). It would be very helpful for all the different crit item information to be posted from the viewpoint of a farmer's harvest -- possibly first by Farming Tier, then within each tier subclassed by field type (flower, grain, vegetable). An alphabetical list of critical items that can be harvested and what they are used for would also be extremely helpful. I don't have enough LOTRO knowledge (or computer expertise) to do this yet, but perhaps someone else could.

Quite welcome! A crit list is a good idea, too. So I just added one. I didn't do an alphabetical one, but I did include the uses for the items with their listings in a by-tier format. Hope you guys find it useful!
you know i am very disappointed in the westfold tier farming it is not very usefull does not match up with apprentice thru supreme. i find my self not looking at it to much.
Hey folks, just updated the guide again with the the Eastemnet Tier and the new RoR info, including the important stuff like the new limit of 12 fields (instead of just 6) and the addition of a slight chance of crest/sigil/shard/etc drops from fields.
