It took 2 tries cause I wasn't sure exactly where the wood was in that little area.
What I did: Do not use your revive until you are on top of the wood
Survive the run to the Giant Canyon (set your home as Rivendell to make retries easier)
When entering you will probably be chased by a bat - I went to the left along the wall just long enough to lose agro, then backed up a bit to stay out of agro range of the worm or drake that's there.
Watch for an opening to run to the big rock in the center - there are a couple mobs around it but if you time it right you can wait them out.
Make your way around the rock to the right.
Make your way to the circle in the picture - avoid mobs - timing is everything
You have to know which section your aiming for - look for the tree in the picture - the wood is right behind the tree.
Here's the fun part - make a mad suicidal dash toward the tree, avoid mobs before you get to the tree, where you will encounter 2 wood trolls and a regular troll if he is there. You cannot avoid these, your goal is to live long enough to get to the wood.
Just as you pass the tree take a hard left so that you are tucked in behind the tree. Don't leave.
DIE
Before you hit revive let the third troll path out of range
Revive
Pick up wood
Then it's your choice as to how to get home, port if you can, die again, DF if your a hunter.
.
If you die before you get to the wood, just retreat and try again - save your revive for the last, you will need it.
I did this on a level 32 hunter - and got really lucky it seems. No stealth, no deaths, just weaving my way in, getting there before the pathing troll, and getting out fast with the wood.
Thanks to all the advice here, otherwise I wouldn't have tried it.

Likewise. If you're careful and patient, you can get to the wood without aggro'ing anything, even on a non-stealth class/race. I went in with my perma-death L32 mannish hunter with every intention on having to run away down the path to Eregion (perma-death character so dying on top of the wood was NOT an option I was willing to settle for). I was pleasantly surprised to find I was able to weave my way there without aggro'ing anything. I did have to pause from time to time to let mobs move a bit so don't expect to be able to bee-line your way there. Take your time and maintain awareness of your surroundings to make sure nothing is getting to close.
Just be quick once you do get there as the pathing troll will spawn and start wandering towards you. I had time to spot the wood (wasn't exactly sure where it was), harvest it, and map out before the troll got close enough to aggro.

The last patch/update removed many of the mobs in the area, and downgraded most of them from Elite to Signature. Fewer mobs and less deadly mobs make it easier to do now. For which I say, Thank you, Turbine!

Thanks for the screenshot. was looking for a huron to drop it not a spawned pick up. Was able to avoid aggro at lvl 35 and complete quest. I can now clear my houses chest of all those wood worker recipes i've been squirling away!
I actualy did it alone as a lvl 25 elven hunter.
Don't ask me how because I don't really remenber.
If I recall right, it involved a lot of running sylvan shadows and lots of luck.
I remember running all the way into the clearing running from something until it aggroed of and missing the spot where it was. Then I walked back avoiding mobs as I could (giants and trolls) and as I was about to give up on finding it (thinking I had to kill a troll or something) there it was, right to the right of me (I was stealthing at the moment).
I don't remember how I got it while avoiding the trolls, but it can be done (probably a matter of timing).
I then ran back like crazy (I didn't even teled back) :P
I just did this as a level 32. I did not use any stealth. Here is what I did.
I entered the valley to the far right. I immediately got aggro'ed by a drake but I kept moving trying to go as far right as possible, steadily climbing up the mountain face. I lost about 1500 morale before the drake gave up. At this point I was on top of the rocks just before the heartwood. (I may have aggro'ed a second drake during my rapid walk, but I never turned around to see ... just kept moving).
Once I was overlooking the tree in front of the heartwood, it was easy to drop down, walk over, pick it up and map home. No mobs between the rocks and the heartwood.
Aggroed one drake in the area before the heartwood. I actually ran past it and before I noticed where it should be. I did not have any trouble in that area. No stealth or the like either.
Since crafting was revamped and the quest was removed from my quest log I was not able to loot the item. I am stuck with a recipe in my crafting panel that I was not able to find a way to remove it.
Has anyone else run into this issue and if so how did you get rid of it or am I stuck with it now?

Yes - No - Yes
Or to be precise: All read recepies for these quests remain in the recepie list, and since I've not found a way to "unlearn" a recepie except by using a one-shot (impossible since we lack a component) or dev removal of it, the question really becomes:
Why did the devs not remove these recepies when the quests were removed?
Sure, the recepie isn't taking up any space (apart from screen space), but it's annoying!
