Tried it today, after reading up on the best ways of grabbing the Black Huorn Heartwood. Everyone says that, if you can manage to run to it, it's an instant click pick-up, so I think to myself that it should be ok. I manage not to aggro anything until I get to the trolls, run past them, aggroing left, right and center, and find the heartwood. Press Delete, spam U, and .... get an 'Examining' timer bar. Of course, with five trolls beating on me, I get interrupted every time I try, and wind up dead
Did this get changed recently? Because I'm guessing it's therefore no longer possible to solo.

That all depends on what class and level you are Basically, barring a resist, every class but Champ and Guard could solo it with their various forms of CC/etc (IMO).
I did this quest last week actually, but got there after a group did 4.7 so the trolls were already dead , but I can't remember for the life of me if there was an induction... I *think* there was one but I'm not sure.
I did this two or three days ago with my L50 hunter and there was a short induction. There was one troll wandering around who was green.. everything else was gray - so I just walked up and got it and ported to Esteldin to craft it. It didnt seem broken to me.

Motif: cant spell
Yes, there is an induction. Did it with a LVL 50 LM (I was 45). We killed 2 trolls and walked right in and grabbed it. Not solo but easy with 1 other player.
I just did this solo on a level 42 guardian last weekend.
I got aggro from two wood trolls so I ran past the Black Huorn Heartwood. I got behind Onodrim and had to stop. I was prepared to fight for my life and die but when the trolls got up to Onodrim they turned around an fled. I was able to pick up the Heartwood without issue.
I did this this week - it was an induction timer. I had a kin guard (50) run in, grab everything and train it out so I could pick it up.
My level 20 lore-master just did the same thing. A 50 hunter kinsman grabbed agro while I ran in and nervously waited for the blue bar to run its course. I ran out, we both ran away and he ported me to Esteldin.
I'm happy that Turbine didn't add level limits to crafting. If someone wants to craft above their level badly enough and can find an escort, it can be done. The main reason I'm leveling my crafting on my alts is because my main character is an explorer and I just don't have room to store the mounds of crafting material he gathers. And besides, its fun. *smiles*
Half of being clever is making certain you are not being stupid.
I soloed this with my level 50 hunter few days back.
I basically used the Elf-racial trait Sylvan Shadows to stealth in (had a +2 stealth cloak).
Got next to the Onod with no problems, waited for the Trolls to move away out of aggro range and collected the Heartwood, then ported out.
Engaged in no combat whatsoever. Admittedly, at level 50 the aggro range for trolls was pretty small, but they wander so anyone with a stealth ability should be able to find an opportune moment.
I've done gm for scholar/weaponsmith/tailor and all the master quests were solo as long as you were careful. There is no careful on this quest, you have to have an escort of at least one other person and they have to be able to take a decent beating.

Ok, I know this is kinda old (9/08) but why did you need to stealth at L50?
Well, I don't know why they needed it but prior to MoM release I found myself using Sylvan Shadows + Stealth Cloak more at lvl 50 than I did from lvl10-49 combined.
I don't think it's an issue of not being able to go the direct route via combat but rather a convenience issue of..."Okay, I could take them on, burn through 2 or so different Pots, and take 3 minutes to accomplish this or I could use this free cloak that doesn't use up resources and be in and out in far less than half that."
When faced with any decision where it was using resources vs. no resources needed or direct way vs. quick way, I always chose the later, which would turn out to involve Stealth.

Except for the rare L42-43 roaming trolls, the wood trolls guarding the entrance to Onod will be Grey to a L50... And the roamers are easily avoided if they're green.
Sorry to read there's an induction timer now. When I did this a year or so ago there wasn't. It wasn't easy solo for a man hunter without Sylvan Shadows, but I remember using Camoflage and DF to get it done. Bard's Arrow and ROT or quick traps can also help keep them off you long enough to nab it and DF out. Or you can wait until you're level 51 and walk right in there and /wave to all the trolls.
Did it this weekend with 25th warden. BUT needed a 50+ friend to agro the woodtrolls. Once they were gone it was a run in the park. Oh, and yes there is an induction timer.
Not sure why they screw woodworkers like this. This is my 4th crafting class to GM and the only one I couldn't solo. Weaponsmith/tailor/scholar, all had components that needed to be retrieved from T4/T5 areas but I got them all without anyone else running interference and all at 25th level, one hunter and the other loremaster.
Now I used my sylvan stealth to get me to the path to eregion but could not get in to the area that had the heartwood. There was a woodtroll on each side and one roamer in the middle, but he never got far enough away that he or his buddies didn't detect me. And them woodtrolls were tough, had a 55+ hunter assist me and one on one got himself killed. But if you have a friend who is 50+ just have them hit a few and move away you can slip in there.

Managed this today after being defeated yesterday. With the aid of a level 50 hunter, we took out a few drakes and then two of the three wood trolls guarding the entrance. Used blinding flash (I'm a level 43 lore - master) on the second troll and finished the first before defeating the second. Just worked straight up to the objective after that and completed the quest. The hunter then mapped me to Esteldin so I could get a horse to trestlebridge and hand in the quest. There is a timer on the objective.
It CAN be done solo. I did it yesterday with my lvl 37 elvin hunter. It took a long time because I was creeping through with Silvan Shadows trying to dodge the drakes. I managed to sneak through the trolls guarding the entrance. It just took patience waiting for the wondering troll to move. Personally I would get a friend to escort.

It's a bit more difficult if you don't have stealth (man warden here). I ended up having to kill an onodrim and ambush a troll to do it, but being level 44 at the time, it wasn't too bad. You're right, though... It's much better with a friend to drag the mobs off while you loot.

This is no longer true. I was trying to do the next tier quest on my cook which was a L6 RK. Couldn't get through TS even with the Captain trying to kill everything. Even the normally Semi-Agro mobs were instant agro on me and when the Captain rezzed me it ported me all the way back to MD with the Captain Rez buff on me. Needless to say it was annoying.

When I did this right before the end of Yule Harvest on my warden there was no timer. Granted a passing 60 Champ slaughtered everything to escort me to the drop. But there was no timer on the quest.
When you hit level 49 regardless of your class, you can just stroll in there without aggro and simply pick it like a daisy. If you can wait that long like I did cos noone wanted to go there with me

The technique described works fine when the crafter is level 20. It is no longer a red zone.
You are also correct. When the crafter too low a level. For example, level 6. It is not possible. I do not remember the exact level. I believe it is 20. Easy enough to know. Just exit Rivendell into the trollshaws. Your radar turns red. Turn around - level up.

Here is what I did, although it wouldn't work for everyone:
I managed to get my lvl 32 Guardian (my Woodworker, who also happens to be an Elf so I have Sylvan Shadows) over to the part of Giant Valley that leads into Eregion and parked her there.
Then I logged my Captain in and got her over there and killed the mobs that would be in the path I needed to get to the Black Huorn Heartwood. I took note of the respawn time (5 and a half minutes) of the mobs so I would know how much time I had to relog in with my Guardian. It worked like a charm.
Did it yesterday, solo, with my lvl 40 hobbit warden. As others mentioned, hobbit stealth will work. I died 3 or 4 times in the attempt, but when I eventually got it, it was easy. The canyon to the left has no mobs, so you can run there to escape if you get into trouble. You have to work your way around to the entrance of the middle canyon without the wood trolls or worms seeing you. Be patient. At some point the trolls wander far enough apart to walk between them and hopefully the worm has wandered off at this point too. The heartwood is just past the entrance on the left side. The quest ring on the map will guide you to it's location. It took me a while to find it, but stay close to Onodrim; you won't aggro him and that area seems safe from the trolls. The Huorn is close by. Good Luck.
It took about 1-2 hours, but it probably would have taken me that long to get a group together.
I was curious if I got lucky or not, I did this in my late 20's solo, using revive. I got close, ran like heck using a morale pot to get right near the wood and died, then poped revive, looted and ported home. I did not get agro standing on the wood, not sure if I got lucky or if anyone can do this, just offering it as a possibility.

If you can reach the wood and break aggro somehow. You are safe. There are no critters that will aggro on you.

all it took for me when i was lev 25 was a lev 60 burglar to kill a few of the dragons and trolls then he snuck me up and i got the wood then i ported us out on the spot.
Is the location for this still next to the Onodirm (boss for one of the books) or has the location changed, as I'm trying to find it on an alt for the second time

I agree this is hard, as is the cook one, but you can't really solo the current tailor one at low level (sorry if it's become lots harder since this quote, in that case disregard. Of course, you can still get an escort, and it's considerably easier than the giant valley ones, since there will be someone in their mid-late 30's in esteldin who can solo a young drake.
Fortunately I met some nice people who toughed it out and helped my level 23 minstrel beat the odds. She was actually able to provide useful heals and keep them alive as well, tho she ended up a bit otherwise, lol
Just did this with a level 25 Elf hunter. Used Slyvan shadows to sneak my way into the valley and look for a good approach. But I got snuffed out by a bat and had to beat a hasty retreat.
Tried again being a little more careful on the approach. But there was no sneaking past the wood trolls at the entrance. Ran as far as I could before being incapped. Revived when the coast was clear and logged out next to the Ent.
Logged back in later and snuck up to the wood and snagged it with no problem at all.
It's much easier than the task that faces my Cook for the same level quest.
Still trying to solo it with my Level 37 Man Champ. Its really hard to solo without some kind of stealth move. The drakes alone are a killer if no one has cleared anything in the area.
May have to get some higher level kinnies to come out of Moria for a while and help.

I've done this twice, both times on level, and both times solo. First time was with my dwarf (no stealth) Hunter; I used traps to get by the trolls and grabbed the wood (back then, not all that long after release, there was no induction timer).
Recently, I did it on my human (again, no stealth, and no crowd control) Warden. The location of the wood has been moved a bit since the first time I did it, but it is still possible to get the wood even with the induction.
As you look at the Onodrim from a distance, there are two ways (around the big rock) to get to him. Obviously, you don't want to use the route on the West side of the rockbecause of all the mobs you'd have to go through. The Southeast side of the big rock has two trolls who do wander a little bit, a patrol that comes from the West side, and a patrol from the area inside where the Onod is at. There is usually a dragon off to the Southeast of that entrance, just to make things a little more challenging.
Watch the movement patterns of the trolls; it is possible to get by those trolls, only aggro-ing one if you time things right. With my Warden, I worked the one on the right, since that also avoids the dragon. I ran past the Onodrim -- as someone already indicated, the pursuit usually breaks off (it didn't my first time in, but did the second time). If the pursuit from the troll(s) continues, head all the way back to the cliff wall behind the Onodrim and bear right a bit; that'll give you some additional distance in which to lose pursuit -- just don't go too far or you'll pick up additional mobs.
If the pursuit does not break off, you can always run to the Northeast, lose the pursuit, and then try again; you have enough armor on a Champion to take the few hits you'll get while being pursued (just avoid those damn dragons).
If you're really worried, eat some morale-replenishing food just before you head in.
Easiest way to do this as long as you are high enough level that it is not a red zone. Run straight to the wood. Stop. Stand your ground. Die. Wait for your killers to return to base. Revive. Pick up the wood. Recall out.
Bonus hint - Put all your equipment in your vault. That way you do not have any repair bills.

I tried this a few times with my level 38 hunter. I would get to a certain point and one of the creatures would chase me down. Sometimes I escaped but always ended up getting chased again. I finally did it when a lvl 63 hunter came along for the ride. Great respect to those who did this without help.
I'm going to try this solo with my lvl 20 champ ... I know i'm a glutton for punishment ....
Pardon the self quoute but I did try this and at lvl 20 it was pretty much suicide. I finally had to resort to bribery and I got some help. With a little diversion I got it without any trouble. If I had the patience to sit and wait and map the mob paths then I still think its possible to get through, but patience, timming and Luck are the key to solo at this level. If you have some form of stealth it would be a piece of cake..
