No it's not completely useless. Unfortunately items that you used to be able to get with tails, ears, or heartwoods are no longer available from the trophy barter. There is however Taddyn in the Bree crafting hall who will trade certain trophies for the new crafting ones but any tails etc are only good for tasks. The rest of the information is, as far as i know, still valid you just can't use tails etc.
Good job on collating all that info Unique ....... although these posts do need updating
