Nah, you're not to far off. Theres not much I have found to make the MIDI do the justice that the actual song may do in-game. All they were talking about above was a way to at least have the instrument that plays in the midi sound like the instrument that will be used in game.
I'll put a notice about it in the about page.. But other than from what has been discussed here in this thread, I have heard no other complaints and TON's of songs are being downloaded so I don't think it is deterring even if the MIDI does sound like ****.
Cool, I was going to mention this too, but I was too busy breaking the song listing.
I was very concerned when I played Margaritaville via get-midi... I logged into lotro in a panic hoping that song still worked
When Warden gets the comment function up and running, (no rush, your busy enough!) we will be able to let people know if the get midi function will play the song correctly or not. It appears to me, that all the songs I transposed by hand will play fine, even sound better then the in-game version, when using Get Midi, however any songs that I used a program to merge multi voices get messed-up.
Ocie-1 explains why this happens in above post.
I tried to use the rating system today, sadly it was the first thing on this site that I had a problem with. Clicking on the star you want didn't always do anything. and sometimes after clicking on one, it would pick a different spot when it did accept, ie. I would click at 85%, it would come up 70%, this with the file stating it had only 1 rating, which I take to be the one I just submitted.
On the files that I click on and nothing happens, I do get a "error on page" message down in the lower right corner of my browser. But nothing else.

Ok, I did some toying around and did happen to get some wierd results with IE. I'm going to try to get some additional robustness in there but for now, once you click on a star, give it like 3 seconds or so to finish its post to the server.. What I found is, if you click a star then click another before it was done posting your vote for the previous star to the server it will mess up the script and you will get funny results from then on. If you start seeing wird things, click the "profile" button, hit refresh, or cntrl+r, to relode the page.
I'm sorry its like that.. I really like that type of 1-100 rating system, except I didnt write it.. I only know a little javascript so most of that code was just copy and pasted.. I do have some friends that are proficient with javascript, so I will send a copy to them and try to get a more error-friendly version in there soon.
Site is down atm but should be back up shortly... Sorry for all the recent downtime guys (and gals).. Sometimes server migrations dont go as well as planned.. But once the migration is complete I think the site will be much faster and more reliable than ever.. Just bare with me for the next 1-2 days.
Hey Warden, ive been putting a bunch of new songs up on the fat lute, and i was wondering if I should be worried that all my songs have a green circle icon next to them when all the others are red. Im not usually one to follow the crowd, but sometimes I miss the memo, if you get me.

You're fine.
They auto-add to your 'My Lute' -- and anything in your 'My Lute' will show green.
Green is good. *grin*

Jazriel the Naughty - Human Minstrel
Jaliel the Undying - Human Captain
Jugnaut of the Grey Mountains - Dwarf Minstrel

Yup, what jundan said.. (Thank you for the assist Jundan)
The green circle is what people will see when its in their library. When people use the download cart to download a song it is added to their library so they can track which songs they have downloaded as well as be able to rate the song.
Of course, as you found out, the other way a song is added to your library is when you upload the song. There is actually a check-box at the bottom of the song submission page (just above the submit button) that sez "Add to library". It is checked by default.
If you click My Lute (in the same panel as where you sign in) you will see the songs in your library.. You can click the 'Remove' link to delete it from your library (just from your library, not from the site) and the lil green circle will change to Red
Been working on getting the word out for those that are in the habit of using my lotro-music site to now go to The Fat Lute. Great job Warden and Figgy. Love the site and what you are implementing. Signed up and have added some songs and will keep adding more as I weed through my files.
Since I will be taking my forums down also I'll mention to each transcriber there to put their songs on The Fat Lute. As Cranberry mentioned I did spoil the transcribers by putting their songs on my site. I am hoping they will go to The Fat Lute to upload their songs so your listing grows beyond lotro-music in a short time
Thanks for doing a great job in a short time and if I can help in any way let me know.
It's a beautiful spring day as Northwoods sits by the lake, strumming his lute wistfully. As the cool breeze washes over him, he muses, "I like the music changes coming up in Book 13. Wouldn't it be wonderful if when uploading multi-part songs each part was assigned a unique X: tag? And when downloading them, you had the option of downloading them as individual files, one per part, or as one concatenated file containing all parts?"
Lle merna aut farien?
Playing music in LotRO is as easy as ABC!
Figgy gleefully chases the butterfly across the stream, cooling her toes in the water as she prances. Where the gentle trickle of water greets the edge of the lake she finds a tall stranger sitting in the shade of a tree, strumming softly on his lute. Using her X-men mind reading powers, she hears his thoughts and being content he means no harm, her hand slowly releases it's grip on the Lightsaber.
What?
Warden and I have already had a chat about the changes. He seems to think it would be easy to code in something like you are suggesting. We'll see...Reporting broken ABCs is priority at the moment. So many plans!

Oooh, a Fat Lute on a rail! *jumps in and starts it*
I see the ETA list is full of big ticket items.
The following are in no way critical things:
- To have a 'browse' ability when uploading songs so uploaders can pick 4-5 files (hopefully soon to be just 1 with the new x: feature) from their computer instead of the current cut/paste?
Yea, those are some good ideas. I never even thought of just allowing the file to be uploaded.. Thats a good one, and especially for the multi part files coming in bk13 like you said.. Will probably have it so you can pick a multi part file, then the system will break it up into the individual boxes then ask you to type in a part name and select the instruments as usual.
BTW, if anyone has some of the bk13 compatible files. Could you please email some of them to warden {@} thefatlute [dot] com so I have something for testing.
And, also those current development things will probably be delayed at least one day.. Forgot today was a holiday.
Oh, just on a side note, I do have the capability to run basically an unlimited slot teamspeak server on the 'the fat lute' server. The reason why teamspeak is that the server software is freeware. Ventrilo (which I would prefer) on the other hand, free server is limited to 8 connections. The paid server is only available to hosting companies.
I'm not really sure if it would be of any use, just saying I could do it.. Lemme know if you think it would be at all beneficial and I could have it setup within an hour.
Commenting on songs has been implemented. There are also more options in the profile page for email notifications and TimeZone so times on the site are correct when you view them.
On a side note, at least for me, when viewing the main song listing with FireFox it will seem to lock up for a few seconds while it works out the layout. I'm going to put in a "Max songs per page" thing here soon, but until then, if you use IE8 it is MUCH quicker.
Even better than IE8's speed is Opera 9.5 beta but its got some small bugs that make it unfit for 'all' of the web, but for thefatlute.com it is awesome.* Only the beta works as fast as I say it does. The 9.0 Release suffers from the same rendering lockups that firefox does.
*Except for GetMIDI.. It will return the midi as a file called viewsong.html so you would have to save it then change the extension to .mid. If you dont care about this, I highly recomend the browser. It has some AWESOME features.. Did you know, Opera was the first browser to have Tabbed browsing? http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/next/
Well, I just wandered over to submit a song or two and saw the "LOLcatz" link, and promptly clicked on it. I was laughing so hard that I had tears streaming down my face -- which would be fine, except I was at work.
LOL.. The button is great too isnt it? When I first put it in, it kinda scared me. Even though I knew what it was gonna be it kinda scrared me, but now just cracks me up..

Thanks for the laughs, Figgy and Warden!
Maybe I'm stupid but I can't figure out how to post any LoLcatz. It keeps wanting to upload something off my computer instead of linking to the picture that gets saved on the cat site. *sigh*
Yea, I just put that page in within like 20 minutes last night.. Didnt have time to write a link checker.. So, for now, just drag and drop the designed photo from webpage to your desktop or other folder then upload it from your computer.
I'll get it so you can enter a link either tonight or tomorrow.

File uploader done.
As for video, I added a link to the song in the Red Status Message at the top after it is successfully added. That should make it 'easier' to get to normal page where you view and add the movie.
Also, you can comment on individual parts now while adding the song as well.
Np! Give it a whirl and if there's anything else I can do to make it even easier please do let me know. Of all things on the site, I definitely want song submission to be the easiest as its the basis for the rest of the site, so I'm open to any suggestions.
Huzzah! Thanks for The Fat Lute! Recently made a minstrel for the specific purpose of roleplaying a minstrel, and the site helped me get some tunes for my character. Even got a few installed from the infamous Cranberry!
And by the way, I'm using the Flock browser, and the site looks and functions perfectly in it. FYI!

Glad you liked the site. Figgy and I have been working hard to accommodate all possibilities and needs of everyone (although development has been slow these past 10 days because of a work project). Because of my bottleneck, nows the time to suggest new features for the site so I can prioritize things better. You can write them here, PM them to me or Figgy, or Email them to me using the "Email Warden" link on the site.
I've never heard of that Flock browser before. Seems like a neat concept for what it offers and I will download and have a look. As for the rendering of sites with it, I did happen to see that it is built on the FireFox 2 engine (they will use v3 engine when it goes live) so, yes, it will work perfectly with TFL.
Yes please! We love to hear from you suggestions and feedback about the site. How do you like the pages for the songbook? Any easier on the loading time? Is there anything you'd like to see done?

I uploaded a few songs to this site. One thing I noticed that some people had already uploaded some of my songs. So there are two Yanni - Marching seasons. Both are created by me, but added by two different users. I don't have a real problem with this just an FYI. I would much rather sort by "transcriber / composer" rather than "added by user". None the less the site looks very good and works nicely. Well done.

For the moment there's nothing we can do about this. Checking for duplication could solve it, however, if you spot one of your songs already uploaded you can contact the Fat Lute team (w00t, go team!) to have it removed so credit goes where credit is due.

It's really not that big of a deal. I don't have a big problem with it because it still has my name in the title. So technically I am still getting credit where credit is due.
