The beginning sequence, with Bilbo telling Frodo about his adventure to the Lonely Mountain, confused me. Apparently, it was supposed to take place just before the events of Lord of the Ring, but Ian...

In the film The Hobbit, Peter Jackson made a number of departures from the Tolkien mythology, some of them serious. You can read about them at the Wikia article The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

I already knew all that. Yes, I know, it's "all in the books," and I suppose I could have "just as easily" reread all of the books instead of asking here. All I was asking was if anyone knows exactly...

Galtrev and Dunlendings - Re: Lore contradictions
In The Lord of the Rings, Dunlendings are depicted as wild and uncivilized. Yet in the game LotRO, the city of Galtrev has the most sophisticated facilities of any place in all of Middle Earth,...

I'm fairly knowledgeable about the books, and I'm very happy with the Peter Jackson trilogy. It kept (almost) as close to the story and (more importantly) the spirit of the story as I could expect...

Why not? You could picture modern-day Hobbits doing it, couldn't you? Tolkien was a Hobbit at heart. :)

Re: Turin
Turin seems to have its root in the word for "master" in one of the Elvish languages.
